The Historic Santa Fe Depot

The original santa fe depot

The new Mediterranean Revival Style

santa fe depot

Our location dates back to 1888, when the Santa Fe opens the Depot in Orange.

In 1889, voters in Southern Los Angeles County decide to break away, creating Orange County. 1891 President Benjamin Harrison becomes the first president to visit the LA area. During peak growing seasons, as many as 48 carloads shipped daily from the Orange Depot.

From 1920-1934 Passenger rail traffic declines. In the mid 1930s, Railroads improve service and trains with new diesel-powered Streamliners. Santa Fe moves forward with plans to replace the depot in Orange by the Spring of 1938.

The new Mediterranean Revival Style Santa Fe Depot is dedicated on May 2, 1938.

During WWII, troop movement and restrictions on fuel use generated a six fold increase in passenger rail traffic.

Amtrak begins service on May 1, 1971. The Santa Fe Depot closes the same year.

In 1989 City of Orange acquires Santa Fe Depot. The Streamliner Lounge and Ruby's Diner renovate the space, creating a new destination inspired by vintage train travel of the Streamline era.
